Many
times your teeth become damaged due to teeth decay or gum diseases. Cavities
are formed due to teeth decay. A tooth filling is one type of treatment which
is done to cure and fill the tooth decay. Here I will share types of teeth
filling and which material is suitable for your teeth?
Keep
in mind that there are many types of material that can be used in teeth filling
but two most common are amalgam and composite filling.
Amalgam Fillings
Amalgam
fillings are also called silver or mercury fillings. These are formed from silver,
zinc, copper, tin, and mercury. These are the most old form of teeth fillings.
Metals in amalgam form soft material when they come together and after that
they converted into hard material.
Composite Fillings
Composite
fillings are also referred as white, teeth-colored fillings. These are formed
from small pieces of silica surrounded by a plastic resins. These are newer type
of fillings as compared to amalgam fillings and in a process of constantly improvement.
In composite fillings blue light is shined on clay which gets harden after many
chemical reactions. It looks like natural teeth.
Which filling material is suitable
for you?
Which
filling material is suitable for you, is matter of consideration. There are
certain factors which are necessary to keep in mind. After assessing these
factors you will be able to decide which type of filling material is suitable
for you.
- Amalgam fillings are stronger than composite fillings. For your back side teeth these are better as compared to composite filling because your back side teeth face major pressure. For your front side teeth composite filling is better.
- It was seen that amalgam fillings are long lasting than composite fillings. In future due to technological advancement composite fillings may get better but right now amalgam fillings are better.
- Amalgam fillings can easily be noticed. But you know that composite fillings look like natural teeth. So if you don’t like that your filling can be noticed then composite filling is better option.
- Amalgam fillings are cheaper than composite fillings. If you are short in budget then it will be a best choice for you.
- Some time it was seen that composite fillings shrink which further creates gapes and ultimately result in more teeth decay. This problem can be overcome if composite fillings are added in small incremental layers.
- As amalgam fillings do not bond with teeth just like composite fillings so dentist has to widen the teeth structure for the base in order to hold amalgam fillings firmly. But in composite fillings no such alteration in teeth structure is required to retain the filling.
So
considering all these factors now you are able to take decision which filling
material is better for you.
